1/8 notes equal 1/2 of a beat
Two 1/8 notes equal one quarter note

Notes are sometimes played between the beats as well as on them. Music beats are divided into fractions of a beat by beams. As you can see in the above example, the beams are joined to groups of 1/8 notes. Individual 1/8 notes have a unique beam.

If there are two beams attached to notes, the amount of beats is again divided in two. Two beams equals 16th notes, 3 beams equal 32nd notes, etc.
