More Chord Shapes |
All the open (first position) chords can and are used in strumming 12 bar chord progressions. The chord forms taught in this lesson are the most often used shapes for playing 12 bar up the fretboard.
It's fun and adds variety to vary the chord shapes being used. For example the A7 chord might be played in 1st position, barred at the 5th fret or even as a C7 form at the 10th to 12th fret. There are many ways to play chords so have fun experimenting.
B7 shape and G7 shape
The G7 chord played as a four-string chord and moved up the neck needs to have four strings barred to compensate for the open strings and a finger one fret higher on the 1st string. The tab below shows this form and the names of the chord up the neck.
The other chord form in the first position is a C7 chord. The chord can be played consistently up the neck using the 4 "inside strings". Don't play the 1st and 6th strings.
The only exceptions are the B7 and C7 chords. Because they are in the "open" position they can include the 1st string. (Because B7 is so low down the neck, we must put our finger on the 2nd fret of the 1st string to make a useable note.)
